Formed in 1988 as Acumen by Jason Novak and Ethan Novak, the band released the debut Transmissions From Eville in the mid-1990s and later adopted the name Acumen Nation. Novak and guitarist/engineer Jamie Duffy launched CrackNation Records around 2000 to release Acumen-related material and other projects. Jamie Duffy's death in 2012 led to a long hiatus, with the group only reuniting sporadically for one-off shows thereafter.
